The Four Kings/Four Generals/Shitennou
Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite were the henchmen of Queen Beryl and the Dark Kingdom. They each commanded different parts of the world. In their previous lives, they were the guardians of Prince Endymion. Beryl and Metallia somehow convinced them to go against the Moon Kingdom. After they died, they were reborn on Earth to look for Endymion. Beryl called them to her side and they promised to serve her. They worked only to get the ginzuishou, the imperial silver crystal, collect energy for Metallia, and destroy the sailor senshi.

Jadeite
Jadeite was one of the four kings that served Queen Beryl. He was the first to appear in the season and the first of the kings to be eliminated. He was at least a thousand years old and survived in the Dark Kingdom since it was sealed in the Silver Millennium. He had short blond hair, blue eyes, and a dark blue-gray uniform with red piping. He was a master of disguise, as he impersonated people from a radio DJ to a cruise ship captain, to collect energy. Jadeite showed ability with fire and telekinesis. He found out the sailor senshis?identities in an airport but did not live long enough to inform Queen Beryl. She summoned him and froze him in a crystal, forcing him to spend his life in eternal sleep. Jadeite was used mostly as a lesson in the consequences of failure. In the manga, not much was changed. His uniform had blue piping and a single epaulette with a blue stone. He also wore black pants tucked into white boots. His mission from the start was to find the ginzuishou. He was destroyed in Act III by Sailor Mars. His final appearance in the manga was the last battle of Endymion and Sailor Moon versus Metallia, when he appeared as an apparition with the other shitennou to wish Endymion well. He commanded the area of the Far East.

Nephrite/Maxfield Stanton/
Nephrite was one of the four kings serving Queen Beryl. He was the second to appear in the season. Same as Jadeite, he was at least a thousand years old and survived in the Dark Kingdom. He was taller than Zoisite but shorter than Kunzite. He had long, dark, mahogany waves and blue eyes. He wore a dark blue-gray uniform with yellow piping and two epaulettes with red stones. When Nephrite was not in uniform, he liked to cruise Tokyo’s streets in his red Ferrari as ‘Sanjouin Masato?or Maxfield Stanton, a wealthy bachelor and businessman. His job was to collect energy but he tried to take Zoisite’s job- to find the ginzuishou, before he died. Zoisite killed Nephrite because of that. His strategy was to single out an individual at certain point in their life, then plant a youma inside an object near the person to excite their energy until it reached its peak. Then the youma would drain their energy. Nephrite was an astromancer, a mage that had the power of the stars. He lived for eleven episodes, many of which he spent quarreling with Zoisite. He also learned the identity of Sailor Moon but never told Beryl. He created a black crystal (kurozuishou) that was supposed to lead him to the ginzuishou. It misled him to believe that Naru had the ginzuishou inside her but it was only reacting to the love she felt for him. Her love drove him to protect her from Zoisite’s plan, deflecting Zoisite’s youma’s energy-draining thorns from Naru, piercing his shoulder. He died there in Naru’s arms. In the manga, his eyes were a reddish-brown color. His uniform had maroon piping with one epaulette with a red stone. He first appeared in Act III to ask Beryl for Jadeite’s position. He takes over in Act IV. In Act V, he is destroyed by Sailor Jupiter. His last appearance was in Act XII, where his apparition appeared to his former master. He commanded the area of North America.

Zoisite/Professor Izono
Zoisite was also one of the four kings that served Queen Beryl. He was the third to appear and the third to die. He was also thought to be the lowest-ranking of the four. Same as the others, he was at least a thousand years old and survived in the Dark Kingdom. He was shorter than Kunzite and Nephrite. He had long copper-blond curls pulled back in a ponytail. Zoisite had green eyes that matched the green piping on his uniform. His job was to find the ginzuishou that would awaken Metallia. After they discovered that it had shattered into rainbow crystals (nijizuishou), he was told to retrieve the shards. He attacked the carriers of the shards and removed them from their bodies. The humans then morphed into one of the Seven Shadows, youma that had been sealed in the ginzuishou before it shattered. When he fought, he used leaps and twists to take them down. Zoisite used fire but was known for his ice blades. He lived for twenty-two episodes. His death was his own fault, because he went against Queen Beryl to attempt to kill Endymion. Beryl killed him with a blast, as he fell into Kunzite’s arms, surrounded by visions of flowers and light. In the manga, he accompanied Nephrite and Kunzite in most of his appearances. He was the youngest of the kings. His uniform had a single epaulette with a green stone. He wore black pants loose over his boots. He first appeared in Act III with Nephrite, Jadeite, and Queen Beryl, where Nephrite offered to take Jadeite’s job. In Act IV, he watched in horror as Nephrite was killed. In Act VI, he dressed as Professor Izono, a beautiful woman, to hypnotize millions and drain their energy. In Act VII, he prepared to kill Sailor Moon but was killed by Sailor Venus. His last appearance was also in Act XII, where his apparition appeared to wish Endymion luck in the battle versus Metallia. He commanded the area of Europe.

Kunzite/Malachite
Of the four kings, Kunzite was the most powerful of who served Queen Beryl. He took direct orders from her and no one else. As with the others, he was at least a thousand years old and survived in the Dark Kingdom. He was taller than Zoisite and the others. He had silver eyes along with pale green-white hair down his back. His uniform had pale blue-purple piping. He wore a white cape with purple lining, secured to both of his shoulders by two epaulettes with dark blue stones. He died by a reflection of his own attack. His job was to take the ginzuishou from the sailor senshi but assisted Zoisite’s efforts to gather the rainbow crystals. He was a powerful mage with lethal attacks. Kunzite never used disguises like Jadeite. He lived for twenty-three episodes, first appearing to comfort Zoisite after Nephrite’s threat. He never found out the identities of the senshi before he died. In the manga, Kunzite had shoulder length white hair and dark gray piping on his uniform. He wore two gray-stoned epaulettes and white pants. In Act V, Kunzite first appeared as Zoisite learned of Nephrite’s death. In Act VIII, after Zoisite’s death, he took over the job with a blackout. In Act IX, Sailor Moon awoke as Princess Serenity after Tuxedo mask was hit by Kunzite’s attack and the light of the ginzuishou gave him back his memories. He took Endymion’s body away but Beryl brainwashed him again. The senshi finally kill him in Act X. Hi final appearance is when his stone is crumbling in Endymion’s hand, after Endymion is freed from Metallia. Kunzite as an apparition told Endymion that Metallia’s weak spot was her forehead. He commanded the area of the Middle East.

Prince Endymion/Tuxedo Mask
Endymion was the latecomer to the Dark Kingdom. Metallia brainwashed him so he followed Beryl. He wore full armor sometimes, a tuxedo and top hat in some others, and dark civilian clothing the rest of the time. His armor included a black cape with red lining, a chest plate with silver decoration, bluish-silver shoulder plates, leg protectors, and a sword. Endymion was not any more powerful than before. When he attacked Sailor Moon, she threw her Moon Tiara at him and reminded him that she was Princess Serenity by revealing the music box she had given him before in the Silver Millennium. He was healed and caught Beryl’s spear of stone with a rose. When it shattered, some of the pieces lodged in his back, courtesy of protecting Sailor Moon. He then died in her arms. In the manga, evil Prince Endymion appeared after Tuxedo Mask died from Kunzite’s energy blast. Kunzite took the body to Metallia and she put evil energy inside his dead body. Endymion became a zombie. He returned to Tokyo to kill Princess Serenity and to get the ginzuishou. When he succeeded in taking her, he tried to take the ginzuishou. Sailor Venus fought Endymion by kicking him in the stomach. After he hurled Luna to a wall Serena transformed into Sailor Moon to stop him. Queen Beryl appeared, strangling Sailor Moon with her hair. Sailor Venus took up the Moon sword again and killed her. Endymion took them to the Arctic Base of the Dark Kingdom and tried to choke Sailor Moon himself. She took the Moon sword and ran it through Endymion and herself. The ginzuishou sealed them in a crystal chamber. The four guardians appeared to their former master, Endymion and told him where Metallia’s weak spot was.

Queen Beryl
Queen Beryl was the ruler of the Dark Kingdom. Her first ambition was to collect enough energy to resurrect Queen Metallia, the true ruler of the Dark Kingdom. Her story is that of severe jealousy. She lived in the Golden Kingdom during the Silver Millennium. Beryl knew Prince Endymion and had easy access to the palace. It is unclear whether or not she was a noblewoman. Apparently Beryl fell in love with Prince Endymion but the feeling was not reciprocated. She watched as Prince Endymion and Princess Serena fall in love. In a meteor shower, the demon Metallia left the sun and arrived on Earth. Beryl by some unknown reason stumbled across Metallia and selfishly chose to follow her. Assisted by Metallia’s powers, Beryl gathered the people of Earth against the Moon Kingdom, using their jealousy of the Moon peoples?lifespan as a tool. She deceived even the prince’s guardians, who were also Earth’s four kings. Yet Prince Endymion did not join her side. When the prince stood with Princess Serena, Beryl killed Endymion. Following that, Princess Serena took up the Moon sword and killed Beryl. She was reborn a thousand years later. She put the Dark Kingdom back into business and sent the brainwashed four kings to find the imperial silver crystal and to the kill the sailor senshi. Beryl sent her servants, the youma, to do most of the fighting. When she appeared to do her own fighting, her newest servant was Prince Endymion, brainwashed. Her hair nearly strangled Usagi to death but Sailor Venus killed her with the Moon sword, which had killed her before.
